During springtime, the city of Castellon comes alive. The locales, along with some fun loving tourists, hold a celebration in honor of Santa Maria Magdalena . Prego is one of the many religious traditions that people in Castellon still hold close to their hearts. It is a procession held every third Saturday of Lent. It s an occasion where tourists and local residents participate in the gaiety of the festivity held in the streets of Castellon.
The Romeria de las Canyes, is another religious pilgrimage that has become a tradition in itself. People participate by carrying canes that are decorated with green ribbons. The procession continues until the ancient town of Hermitage of Magdalena is reached. Right after the religious ritual, locales and tourists participate in a lot of fun activities, which makes the day lively and upbeat. Weeklong festivities followed the event. Tons of entertainment, musical concerts, fireworks display and other spectacular events keep the fun alive.
During the said tradition, the Virgin of Lledó is given honor. Each town has its own representatives to parade along with the Gaiata during the Processó de les Gaiates. A Gaiata is actually a float, which signifies the foundation of the city. Participants are made to go to various places that are the key destinations of the religious parade. These areas include the Casetas or the meeting place, Mesón del Vino or the wine house and lastly, the Crafts and Altemative Lifestyles Fair.
Other important traditions in Castellon are the feast in honor of Santa Maria del Lledó, which is celebrated every first Sunday of May. The feast of Saint Pere Apostol , on the other hand, is held in Grao of Castellón de la Plana.
