Most visitors to Spain are lured to it by its rich cultural and historical heritage. Its buildings and the numerous fiestas are a must-see in a country so vast. Each locality also has its own charm. Although not widely known, avid globetrotters and tough adventurers acclaim Spain to be quite a destination. And of course, one remarkable place that must be in any backpacker s map is the province of Castellon . Tucked in the eastern shores of Spain, the region of Castellon is home to varied landscapes that are not usually associated with the country.

In the province s coastal areas which face the all-too-popular Mediterranean Sea, the land is generally flat and covered by lush greenery interspersed with quaint citrus orange farms. Castellon s Costa Azahar has pristine, utterly irresistible white sand beaches with crystal clear waters. The 112-kilometer coastline is great for taking a dip into the Mediterranean s warm waters that regularly entice people from the colder countries. Now, if you wish to have some privacy, there are also numerous coves, hidden nooks and seemingly private beaches to enjoy. Popular water sports such as jet skiing, scuba diving, sailing, and of course swimming are also on offer. Even the most demanding tourists with more adventurous inclinations will never be disappointed.

Journey through the coastal areas and enjoy the beautiful scenery while passing towns such as Vinaros, Benicarlo, Torreblanca, Burianna, La Ribera de Cabanes, Moncofar, Almazorra, Almenara, La Llosa, and Oropessa del Mar, to name a few. One of the most important towns in the province is its capital, Castellon de la Plana and Peñiscola , home of the unyielding Pedro de Luna , fondly known in the province as Papa Luna who later became Pope Benedict XIII . His old house still stands in the town up to this day. Its rich history can also be seen in its many beautiful buildings that seem to defy time. It is surely worth a day excursion.

Vinaros, situated on the northern part of Costa del Azahar , is a pretty tourist haven and resort town and fishing village. The gastronomic experience is also quite amazing because of the fresh catch that is on sale everyday, from the fishermen who sail its waters.

The coast is also well known for its fragrant-smelling air. The scent of oranges and pines are all over the air. In fact the coastal area was came to be known as Costa Azahar for the sweet smelling orange plantations in the area, Azahar being the Spanish word for orange blossom.

Another excursion destination is the Columbretes islands , approximately 60 kilometers off the coast of Castellon province. The archipelago is composed of four small islands and a number of rocky land masses. In recognition of its beauty the government made it a nature park to preserve its splendor.

The waters surrounding the Columbretes islands have bountiful fish stocks. Fortunately, due to its status as a nature park, commercial fishermen are not allowed to fish in its waters. However, fishing as a sport, which is a great activity for the family, is allowed. Lobsters and grouper fish are the usual catch in the area, popular for picnics and drinking parties.

Another nature sport, bird watching, is also particularly popular because of the large concentration of European migratory birds that pass by, on their way to Africa. Some species that can be seen in Columbretes are the Audouin s gull, Eleonora s falcon , and Cory s shearwater.

The more daring tourists can also try out ultra-light and Piper flying. For those who are interested, you may visit the Pinar aerodome and ask instructors to help you out or just take you for an extreme ride.

If water is your element, head straight to the Nautical Club and rub elbows with experienced mariners and take a boat or yacht out to sea with them. The towns of Morello and Vinaros on the other hand have clubs for mountaineering enthusiasts. The province s rugged peaks are truly a challenge to take.

The wealthy and rather laid-back tourist, the leisure lover and the sports enthusiast are sure to fit in Castellon s beautiful golfing greens. Club de Golf Costa de Azahar is a top destination for such people. Especially attractive is the course s top-notched facilities amidst a spectacular view of the Mediterranean Sea . If a mountain course is your thing then the Club de Golf de Mediterraneo is the place for you. It is roughly 7 kilometers inland from the town of Borriol.

Cyclists can also take advantage of the mountain areas that offer great fun and adventure. It is also a top excursion site for walking or trekking trips for the more amateur travelers.

More conventional sports such as basketball, soccer and tennis can also be enjoyed in the province s numerous sports facilities.

Along with the hundred and twelve Mediterranean Coast, Costa Azahar, South of Costa Dorada , lies Castellon . Down to Valencia and beyond Grandia , Castellon is the capital of one of the most mountainous provinces of Spain . Mountainous activities, rural walks, and sandy beaches indeed highlight a variety of outdoor activities around the ideal villages of Castellon . These are the things one could cherish since it shares both a hilly landscape and clean and warm seawaters.

Moreover, the place isn t that big, making it pleasant for the guest to tour around. Likewise, the groves of orange trees could be enjoyed along the way. True that Costa del Azahar is comparatively undeveloped; yet, one would certainly be pleased with both its historical and modern features. Castellon reveals a beautifully modernized city. A walk can bring forth surprises, displaying the antique quarters about the Plaza de Sta. Clara, the Plaza Mayor, and the Plaza de la Pescaderia . Here, one can witness the important Gothic and Renaissance monuments, stroll along its shady parks, and even shop at its modern establishments.
